My Superhero

When your children are born you as a parent are the center of their world.  Their existence centers around learning to call you, toddle to you and to show you how much they love you. Their goal in life is to be so adorable that you as their parent can’t resist them. Then as their senses develop and their understanding expands you take second place to their new favorite past time and “what I want to be more than anything” friend……. a superhero. For little boys especially, superheros become their role models, their imaginary friends and go to Halloween costume character. Some boys grow up and forget about their superhero crush but others….. sadly to say never grow up. I didn’t realize this until today when Alexa sent me a text message from school of a picture of a spiderweb with “Spider Man” written in the middle. Before looking closely at the picture I sent her a text back “What is this?” But as I waited for her reply I enlarged the picture and saw written haphazardly in the corner “Christian Andreacchio”.

And then Alexa responded “Mrs. Fort showed me Christian’s painting on her cabinet that he did in 8th grade.” I felt like Christian’s superhero had reached in and squeezed my heart with his super human strength.  So yes, it was a tearful ride from Louisville to Meridian but I had to smile when I thought back to all the spider man action figures I bought him when he was in elementary school, or a 19 year old Christian sliding through the house like a Ninja but he said he was like Spider Man…. 0r the fact that he had a Spider Man face mask that he wore when he was working on the boat in cold weather which we found in his bag when it was brought back from the boat.

It made me realize that Spider Man had been a pretty important companion for Christian over the years. …….  And sometimes the man holds on to those little boy dreams.

“No matter how buried it gets, or lost you feel, you must promise me, that you will hold on to hope and keep it alive. We have to be greater than what we suffer.                                               My wish for you is to become hope.                                                                                                People need that.”
